Forestry in its most simple form requires nothing more than light, water and time. Because of its long-term nature professional management is vital, as a poorly managed crop cannot be corrected until the next rotation.
The principal tree species in the IForUT forest portfolio is Sitka spruce. Not only is it our fastest growing commercial species but also the preferred timber characteristics of the sawmill sector. Spruce accounts for 89% of our forest area with the remainder consisting of fir, pine and broadleaves.
The IForUT forest portfolio has been specifically developed to consist of a wide spread of tree age classes. This means that we are constantly harvesting and replanting trees creating a sustainable and productive forest holding.
IForUT timber sales are currently at a sustainable level of 100,000 cubic metres per year, making IForUT the second largest log producer in Ireland.
