Sustainable Forestry Management

Maintaining standards

Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is a relatively new development in Irish forestry and gives further recognition of the positive attributes of well-managed forests. SFM is based on agreed international principles of best forest management taking into account the economic, social and environmental values of our forest resource. These principles have been internationally endorsed by Governments, industry and the main NGO'S who promote social and environmental values. In Ire land our forests and management practices are independently audited against these principles and then certified/labelled to allow traceability from the forest gate to the end retail customer.

Currently over 40% of IForUT's forest portfolio is certified to SFM and we aim to have the remaining portfolio certified shortly. SFM certification is viewed by IForUT as being crucial to maintaining and growing our log sales and also to independently verify to our unit holders that our forest portfolio is a socially responsible investment.
